As I was walking up 8th ave with my son, a random man walking down saw my little man’s Afro. I think he felt so strongly about the fro, so he wanted to stop him give him props and show him some love for bringing the style back. He asked my son if he knew the history of the hairstyle. Of course he did! I make sure my mixed-ish kids know their negro history.

The gentleman then proceeds to give him all kinds of wisdom. He wanted to make sure my son gathers all of the knowledge he needs because that is where his power lies. He made sure my little man understands how to deal with all of the young girls who are going to be after him because he’s so damn cute, and talked about how to live as a brown man in our society. He was like an uncle that popped out of nowhere.

I must say, he was on point. I let him talk to my son for a while. It was cool to see this man break down some of the rules of life to my son.

As he was talking, one of the guy’s friends walked by. He kinda joined in but let Uncle Larry do the talking because he said Larry knows what he’s talking about. I don’t know if his name was Larry or not but I think guys his age were named Larry, Rufus, Clyde or Eddie. Simple old black men names from back in the day.

It was such on interesting moment.

It takes a village to raise a child? Probably. I guess that village can be anywhere. Even in a city a big as New York.
