My mother always decorated our house with brown Santas. I never even thought twice about how different it was until I got back from college.

I guess it was somewhat revolutionary for the mother of the only brown skinned family, who lived within a certain five mile radius in a suburban Connecticut, to rock her negro Santa decorations in her front windows back in the early 70’s.

While shopping for cheesy decorations for my daughter’s second annual Christmas party at my apartment today, I saw this in my neighborhood. I bought it for like $1.05 from the dollar store. In thinking that I’m inheriting her semi-radical roots and proudly posting my own brown Santa.

I think the difference is that all of the people in my hood are brown in this part of the Bronx-at least for now.

Wait, wasn’t Santa from the bush in central Africa anyway?
