Almost every day at Ain’t Too Proud there is some kind of Broadway or TV legend that comes backstage. I admit that most of the time, I’m not always aware of the resume of the celebrities the cast gets to meet after our shows. Tonight, there was someone I actually knew.

Dave Winfield!!!

Following college, this man was drafted by four teams in three different sports. He went on to be a 12-time MLB All-Star, a seven-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a six-time Silver Slugger Award winner.

In 2004, ESPN named him the third-best all-around athlete of all time in any sport. He is a member of both the Baseball Hall of Fame and the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

While I was chatting with him, I asked him, “Who is your all time favorite baseball player?” He said, “Me!” He’s still quite confident.

He did talk about how he played against some of the greatest players of his time; Willie Mays, Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron. He also mentioned how he mentored players like Ken Griffey Jr.

When he spoke about Bob Gibson, I asked if Bob was really that scary of a pitcher. He said, “Yeah, he brushed me a back a few times..after I hit a few long ones on him!”
