It feels good to get started on the broadway production of this show. It’s been a long journey, but I feel it’s worth it.
We started with a workshop in January of 2017, then we traveled to Berkeley, CA to mount a full production at the Berkeley Rep.
We took time off due to no theaters being available for us in New York at the time. We all met again in May of 2018 for a rehearsal for a mini-tour. After a week in Bloomington, Indiana for tech rehearsal and one show there, we set off for three cities in the summer and fall of 2018. Ain’t Too Proud went on to have sold out record breaking 6 week runs in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Toronto.
The part of the process I didn’t enjoy was being away from my kids for so long. I did manage to have them during the summer when we were in D.C. last summer. What a great time we had. The other times when I was gone? Not so much fun.
The thing I did like by touring was getting to see more of this beautiful country I live in. America is truly beautiful. Yes, Toronto is cool too. I love the people there, the transit system is amazing and it’s just a peaceful city. It’s a little too cold for a brother like me.
I love Northern California. It’s my favorite part of the United States so far and the only place I really want to live, as of right now. Who knows, things might change when I see some new city or state. I’m leaving my options open.
My focus now? This show and staying in New York to raise my two beautiful children. They mean the world to me and I’m fortunate to have a project that will hopefully keep me stabilized in this city.
I’m focused. Focused on playing my ass off, making this cast dance like they’ve never danced before, and transferring my love of playing music to the audience every night.
It’s such an amazing show. I hope you all can see it. I’m so ready.
First preview February 28th and opening night…March 21.
Get ready.
